Services
At Millsaps Literacy, I provide structured, engaging literacy instruction to children ages 3 to 10, tailored to their unique learning needs. My services include:

1:1 Tutoring
Ideal for children with dyslexia, other reading difficulties, or kids who need individualized attention. Each session is fully customized to your child’s needs and grounded in the Orton-Gillingham method—a proven, multi-sensory approach backed by decades of research. Tutoring is priced at $65 per one-hour lesson, with a minimum of two lessons per week.

Pods: Small Group Tutoring
Looking for something more social or cost-effective? Pods are small reading groups (2–4 children) that still offer personalized instruction, but with the added energy of collaboration and peer encouragement. Pod placement depends on the availability of other children at a similar reading level to ensure effective, targeted instruction.

Reading Readiness (Ages 3–4)
Reading Readiness is a class designed to give young children a jump-start on reading. Using rhythm, rhyme, and listening games, it introduces symbol-sound correspondence in a fun, engaging way that lays the foundation for strong phonics skills. Class will begin in August if there is sufficient interest.
I employ the Orton-Gillingham approach—a structured, sequential, and multisensory method designed to help children, particularly those with dyslexia, develop strong reading and spelling skills. This approach breaks reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds, building on these skills over time. It's direct, explicit, and tailored to each learner's needs, making it effective for children who struggle with traditional reading instruction.

What sets this method apart is its foundation in the Science of Reading—a body of research that identifies how children best learn to read and why some struggle. Orton-Gillingham is recommended by leading literacy experts and has decades of success in helping children become confident readers.

Complementing this, I integrate Montessori principles into my sessions, creating a hands-on, child-centered learning environment. This fusion ensures that lessons are not only effective but also engaging, fostering a love for reading from an early age.

Why it Works
My Story
I’m Grace Millsaps—literacy tutor, dyslexia interventionist, author, and parent.

My journey into literacy tutoring began with my daughter’s diagnosis of dyslexia. Despite my background in education, I struggled to find the right support for her in New Orleans. So I took matters into my own hands. I trained in the Orton-Gillingham method and started teaching her myself. With time and persistence, she went from reading well below grade level to scoring in the 99th percentile in reading on the Willow School entrance exam.

I’ve spent my career working with young children—as the founder and former Director of Algiers Point Montessori (now The Crescent School), and as the author of three children’s books: What the Sleepy Animals Do at the Audubon Zoo, You Wouldn’t Like Me Without My Coffee, and Snowball Rainbow.
Today, I live in Algiers Point with my husband (and co-author) Ryan and our daughter Tallulah. When I’m not tutoring, I love to read, bake, make Mardi Gras costumes, and explore the outdoors.

Helping children learn to read is my passion—and I’d be honored to support your family.
